Harlem Summer

Harlem Summer
I found a paperback copy of *Harlem Summer* in a used bookstore, and purchased it on a whim (having lived on the edge of Harlem for several years, I wondered if the book would mention landmarks or spots that I knew). This turned out to be a very compelling, well-written book with excellent characterisations. My favourite character is Old Paul, Mark Two's Grandfather. But really, all the characters were well drawn, believable, and multi-faceted, even the "villains", Dippy and Duke. The novel also works in relevant historical information, concerning the Montgomery Bus Boycott, Marcus Garvey's life and times, etc. Though I found it in the "young adult" section, as an adult I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Where are you?
This was one of the first books I have ever read. I have read it time and time again from my library when I was around ten. This book is one of the greatest around and If I can find it, I would give it to my children to read it.

Indian Summer : A True Account of Traditional Life Among the Choinumne Indians of California's San Joaquin Valley
Published in Paperback by Heyday Books (November, 1993)
Authors: Thomas Jefferson Mayfield and Malcolm Margolin
Average review score:

An Inside Look at the Indians of the San Joaquin Valley
Thomas Jefferson Mayfield was only six years old when his family first laid eyes on the grand beauty of the primal San Joaquin Valley in Central California. The year was 1850 and California had just been admitted to the Union as a free state. The Mayfield family settled near Sycamore Creek, east of what is now Bakersfield. The Choinume Yocuts Indians inhabited the region and Thomas Jefferson Mayfield later recalled that the Indians were kind and compassionate to these visitors in their land. On many occasions they showed great care for their welfare.

The Indians provided meat and food stuff during desperate times, without ever being asked. After the brief illness and death of his mother, the Indian women asked Mr. Mayfield if they could watch over little Thomas during his many absences. He knew his son would be in better company with them than the white settlers and gladly agreed to the arrangement. For ten years he grew up knowing security and peace with the Choinumne Indians. He learned their ways and their language, their games and hunting techniques.

Conflict was in store for this peaceful tribe; the Monache Indians of the upper foothills and the settlers became overtly hostile. The Yocuts were the ones caught in the middle. Not only did Thomas Jefferson watch the landscape change, but he also watched his beloved guardians decimated by civilization.

This is Thomas Jefferson Mayfield's spoken testimony to historian Frank Latta of those precious ten years. The book is pleasantly laid out in a sequence that is easy to follow. The large print also makes this publication a joy to read.

RARE HISTORICAL COMMENTARY
As a fifth generation native of California, I had never heard of such a case where a white child lived with any of the local tribes prior to decimation and influence of outside influences. The true nature of these early natives is thus revealed with great credibility. This remarkable experience of the young Mayfield was almost lost when he revealed his story in 1928 for the first time just prior to his death at age 85. Still, it was not until 1993 that this story was published in it's pure and beautiful essence for the modern reader to enjoy and appreciate.

She's studied from madams as well as interviewed dozens of men. Now the hard part she needs a test subject. She's always felt a little heat with him but she can't believe when he agrees to be her guinea pig. She intends to weave intricate fantasies between them but he throws her research out the window when she realizes he doesn't want a fantasy he wants her but after all the pretending...who is she anyway? A book that has plenty of sexuality as well as a nice secondary plot invloving a bit of mystery.

Winner of the WordWeaving Award of Excellence
Dr. MacKenzie Lloyd moves her scientific research from the lab to the bedroom with a three-step plan formulated to please her future husband. She has gathered imperial evidence, interviewed professionals, and formed her hypothesis. Now she needs to test the validity of her conclusions in the field. In other words, Mac needs a man to help her put her theories in practice. But when her starts practicing her techniques on sexy CEO Lucas Wainright, Mac gets rather unexpected results.

With looks like a fallen angel, Lucas makes women's hearts go pitter pat, but he decided a long time ago that he does not need the responsibility of a wife. Mac's unorthodox proposition of no strings attached sex is tempting. Lucas senses a sensual, sexy woman concealed beneath Mac's prim, innocent appearance. Her courage and honesty likewise provide enticing allure. In fact, he has never met a woman who arouses such erotic fantasies in him, yet she has yet to reveal that the attraction is mutual. The result is a heady challenge Lucas cannot resist.

Seductive fantasy meets the demands of reality in INTENT TO SEDUCE with the sophisticated flair that characterizes author Cara Summer's work. Indeed, seduction becomes both a science and an art, carefully balancing the desires of the libido with the needs of the heart. This brilliant scientist and talented CEO need to learn that sensuality and romance go hand in hand when two people share their profound connection. More accustomed to lab experiments than bedroom ones, Mac proves to be an enticing heroine as she formulates her plans to please Lucas. Her savvy, gutsy experimentation make her a real delight. Lucas' demand for reality to supplant fantasy does not fit with Mac's plan, providing titillating conflict of the sensual nature. A strong secondary plot lends added depth and more delightful characters. Indeed, an absolutely memorable romp, INTENT TO SEDUCE earns the WordWeaving Award of Excellence.

Knowing Jesus in Your Life
Published in Paperback by Morehouse Publishing (June, 1995)
Authors: Carol Anderson and Peter Summers
Average review score:

approachable entree to Christian life
While the style is a bit too oral and loose for 5 stars, this easy-to-read, short book gives a very down to earth introduction to what it really means to be a Christian. Personal stories bring theology out of the clouds and into real daily life; I especially admire the author's willingness to reveal her own weaknesses as well as how knowing Jesus has affected them. She never, before or after her conversion, comes off as a stained-glass, holier than thou person. Some of the images and illustrations she uses are uniquely helpful in bringing home what a Christian doctrine actually means to us. You will get right to the heart of Christianity by reading and reflecting on this book, and you'll feel able to make an intelligent choice about your faith.

A radical book for radical times
Rev. Anderson has an excellent grasp of relational Christology and writes in a straight forward manner with great clarity and humor. Her personal story of coming to faith is captivating and offers encouragement to those who struggle with questions such as: Who is this Jesus? What does he mean to me? Does he make any difference in my life? She nailed it down when she wrote:"Following Jesus is a radical step. It is not to be religious: it is to have a relationship with a person, who, in fact, calls into question everything about our lives and moves us in directions that go against all that the world thinks is important." Well done. She answers the question as to who Jesus is to her, details her shocking experience of being used by God for the physical healing of another and invites us into relationship with God that will indeed change everything. An excellent book, easy to read, hope filled and life changing. I will read anything that this author writes.

Late Summer Break
Published in Paperback by Papier-Mache Press (April, 1995)
Author: Ann B. Knox
Average review score:

Wise views from an elder
I found this collection deep in wisdom and the kind of perspective only someone who is older and mature can give. Her three stories at the end of the book of same events described in the differing voices of a grandmother, her daughter, and grandmother were extremely insightful in showing how each of us experiences an event through our own emotionally laden perspectives. Even the simplest tale here is deep in its wisdom and its multilevel insights about relationship, change, and growth.

A luminous collection of country stories
The short stories in this book are quiet on the surface, and yet stay with one long after the book is finished. Most are set in contemporary rural areas, and but manage to be timeless in their appeal. I keep recommending this book to friends, but I won't lend out my own copy for fear of never getting it back. A writer I keep hoping to see more of!

Life at Blandings: Something Fresh, Summer Lightning and Heavy Weather
Published in Paperback by Penguin USA (Paper) (January, 1988)
Author: P. G. Wodehouse
Average review score:

Very funny with interesting characters
This is my first P.G. Wodehouse book. I liked the stories so much that I immediately bought another of his books. The plots are amusing, but the characters are the center of the book. Lord Emsworth is described as a man who "never experienced the thirll of ambition fullfilled, ... but never knew the agony of ambition frustrated". Another very interesting character, Mr. Peters, who belongs to a group of men who "... cannot rest, who are so constituted that they can only take their leisure in the shape of a change of work". Interestingly, their personalities evolve as the story unfolds. Wodehouse satire excludes no one not even writers. He writes, "The reason why all we novelists with bulging foreheads an expensive educations are abandoning novels and taking to writing motion-picture secnarii is because the latter are so infinitely the more simple and pleasant". I also enjoyed his reference to the critics in the preface of "Summer Lightning".

It's certainly a very entertaining book, with a lot of opportunities for vocabulary building. I would recommend this book for students of English as a second language.

wonderfully funny novels by a master of humor
The three novels in this volume are three of the first four novels in P G Wodehouse's great Blandings Castle series (the other is Leave It to Psmith). Something Fresh isn't quite as good as Summer Lightning and Heavy Weather, because that memorable pig, the Empress of Blandings, has not yet appeared at the Castle. Heavy Weather takes place immediately after Summer Lightning, and the two are, in my opinion, two of Wodehouse's very best. Some of the great Wodehouse characters are here - the woolly-headed Ninth Earl of Emsworth, his sister, Lady Constance, and brother, The Honorable Galahad Threepwood, not to mention, among others, The Efficient Baxter. Not to be missed by anybody with a sense of humor.

Love Comes When You Least Expect It
Published in Audio CD by Dick Summer Communications (24 February, 2002)
Author: Dick Summer
Average review score:

Back to the future
I have both of Dick Summer's new CDs and I recommend them. It was wonderful to hear, again, this master story-teller weave the old magic.
Those of us who, as teens, listened to Dick's late night show back in the 60s, and who mused about "what dreams may come" will recognize, with a smile, the velvet voice and the hypnotic style that is still as seductive as it ever was.

The subject matter is more contemporary than I had hoped, but that may prove to be more appealing to many for whom listening to Summer is a new experience.

As for me, it was just a treat to be, once again, in the company of an old friend, now that the brave new world is upon us.

In a league with Saint-Exupéry and Bach
While playing this CD, I was immediately transported back to those late nights in high school, when we all listened to Dick Summer's quiet, powerful tales on our radios. The production values and storytelling skills are unmatched... his impeccable timing and word choice--along with those mesmerizing cadences, verbal filigrees and poetic turns of phrase--provide honeyed balm for yearning souls.

He weaves an audio spell as well, if not better, than anyone who's ever purred into a microphone. As a pilot, I was delighted by the way he's continued, and extended, the literary tradition of authors like Antoine de Saint-Exupéry and Richard Bach. This is honorable work, giving audiences a feel for the sky's loneliness/joy/drama... plus it's such a rare pleasure to *listen to* a story which was specifically DESIGNED to be listened to - and created by a consummate practitioner of the art.
